2012-2013 Winter Festival: A New Year's Celebration

Abstract

Friday, December 28

Ornate iron gates swing open. Arrive at the beautiful Schloss Leopoldskron, your Rococo palace home for the next 6 nights! Roam the Chinese and Venetian rooms, the Chapel, and the Marble Hall. Discover the hidden staircase in the old-world library, learning about the history of this incredible palace on a guided tour. Stroll around the lake. Relax in the company of other Festival participants, raising a glass to usher in an amazing week at the welcoming reception and dinner.

Saturday, December 29

History. Stories. Culture. Explore the streets of this spire-filled city and reflect on its past with an expert guide after listening to an invigorating morning lecture to set the scene. As the night falls, sample local specialties at the Augustiner Closter and Brewery back in Salzburg! In the mood for more Austrian culture? Marionettes, Mozart, or a modern Salzburg Winterfest performance may be just the ticket for an optional evening in town.

Sunday, December 30

The sun rises. Glide by boat across the peaceful alpine Lake Konigsee in Bavaria on your way to the lovely St. Bartholomae chapel, where Fellows may opt to enjoy a delicious German lunch. As the scene changes, we travel by bus to begin an exploration of the underground Berchtesgaden Salt Mines. Wearing typical miner's uniforms, experience the thrill of the descent into the mountain by rail, raft, and authentic wooden slides. Return to the magnificent Marble Hall to meet an Austrian wine connoisseur, sampling outstanding local wines over dinner.

Monday, December 31

Crisp air. Jingling bells. A winter wonderland! Wind through majestic mountains and snowy woods on a horse-drawn sleigh ride. Arrive at the alpine hut Oberhofalm in Filzmoos for warm laughter with new friends and an optional tasty and filling lunch. Return to the Schloss in plenty of time to ring in the New Year with an elegant gala event! Enjoy a candlelit dinner followed by dancing with live music and spectacular fireworks to welcome the arrival of 2013!!

Tuesday, January 1

Rest. Relax. Enjoy an extended New Year's Day Brunch. Decision, decisions!!!! Choose to stroll around the lake or the town. Watch the Sound of Music with new recognition of the sights and scenes of Salzburg (followed by a lecture by Georg Steinitz, assistant local director of this famous film!). Tonight, step back in time to the days of the salons of Max Reinhardt as you are treated to an intimate concert experience in the Great Hall, following dinner in the Marble Hall.

Wednesday, January 2

Ski! Sled! Snowboard! Shop! Spa! The mountain village of Bad Hofgastein awaits for both snow-sport enthusiasts and non-skiers alike! Indulge yourself with a warm cup of hot cocoa in spectacular mountain landscapes. Arrive at the Schloss for an après-ski Austrian BBQ and farewell party. Share the memories at the Schloss Bierstube, enjoying long conversations into the night with friends and family as you raise your glass one last time to bring this amazing week to a close.

Thursday, January 3

Depart for home, with your photos and memories to last a lifetime!
