What Will The Next “Enlightenment” Look Like?

Online

17.30-19.00 CEST / 11.30-13.00 ET / 16.30-18.00 GMT

Overview

Confronting the compounded impacts of the pandemic, climate crisis and structural injustice ushers a protracted and complex period of reassessment, reimagination, and regeneration. Complex problems call for complex solutions. A new “Enlightenment” is needed – but what will it look like? Disparities between existing knowledge systems need to be acknowledged and addressed.

Have we ignored indigenous knowledge systems to our planet’s peril? What knowledge is flowing into the development of artificial intelligence and what are the implications for humankind? Are new, more synthetic ways of learning emerging and, if so, can we find ways to think about individual independence and collective interdependence in new ways? Can we rethink and reframe our relations to others and to our planet before it is too late to act?

Part of Salzburg Global’s Designs on the Future initiative, the idea for this provocative discussion emerged during a conversation that took place during our program: The Humanizing Power of the Arts: Building Back Fairer. We invite you to join us on this philosophical journey.
