How Will Diversity Make a Difference?

Overview

“There are not more than five musical notes, yet the combinations of these five give rise to more melodies than can ever be heard.” ― Sun Tzu, The Art of War

Creativity thrives on diversity with innovation blooming at the intersections. Yet increasingly, diversity has become a polarizing topic caught up in left vs. right culture wars. What if the diversity debate could be completely reframed so that diversity is seen as a tool that can help everyone – something that is not just ethical but essential?

There is an enormous number of individual, institutional and international examples of the “diversity dividend”. Evidence shows that diverse approaches are not just the right thing to do, they are also the smart thing to do: varied teams make better decisions, the application of insights or approaches from one discipline create the breakthrough in another, diverse portfolios yield better returns.

We are at a remarkable but perilous moment in human history, a moment of multiple and convergent crises. The ability to identify, design and apply diverse approaches will be key to developing solutions to the genuinely existential challenges that lie ahead this century.

Part of Salzburg Global’s Designs on the Future initiative, this lively discussion of diverse views will explore why diversity matters, how we can bridge the culture-war divide and how human diversity – in all its forms – will help us develop better solutions. Join us.
