The HKFYG Jockey Club School of Global Leadership Launch Ceremony with Salzburg Global Seminar

Abstract

Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to nurture cohorts of positive and inspirational young leaders with global perspective, spirit of innovation, and a sense of social responsibility, The HKFYG Jockey Club School of Global Leadership introduces Salzburg Global Seminar with the theme of "Leadership for Inclusive Futures in Hong Kong" in 2017 to connect top tri-sector gurus and foster cross-field collaboration in this fast-paced, complex era with diversified challenges ahead.

Political and socioeconomic polarization is on the rise globally. Hong Kong is no exception, having experienced growing tensions and dissatisfactions among its population. Problems of rising inequality, unaffordable housing, low social mobility, and the increased economic, social, and political integration with China are causing rifts in Hong Kong's society.

Growing mistrust towards governments coupled with cynicism and skepticism about both the private and public sectors are complicated by lack of understanding or appreciation of the role and benefits of the civil society sector. These factors contribute to growing concern amongst younger people in Hong Kong about their own agency, and whether they can bridge divides for the future. Values traditionally upheld in Hong Kong are being questioned, as international norms of human rights, justice, and sustainability gain traction. The notion of 'economic development at all costs' is no longer readily accepted at a time when housing is unaffordable for the majority of the population.

To respond to rising tensions in the territory and avoid further escalation, Salzburg Global Seminar and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups are developing a multi-year joint initiative that aims to build a new leadership cohort and enhance trust for greater social, economic, and political inclusion in 21st century Hong Kong.

The HKFYG Jockey Club School of Global Leadership Launch Ceremony with Salzburg Global Seminar - Leadership for Inclusive Futures in Hong Kong will take place November 17-19, 2017 in Hong Kong with a high-level public event featuring a prominent speaker and panel discussion. The event will then be followed by a solution-focused two-day program addressing rising economic, social, and political divides through concrete case studies of urban and civic tensions.

Session Format

The program consists of two parts: A high-level event with a keynote speech and moderated panel discussion on Visions for an inclusive Hong Kong by 2030; followed by an intensive two-day leadership program. The leadership program is designed to be highly interactive and participatory and includes larger and smaller working group discussions and facilitated skill-building workshops. The program will also have presentations and panel discussions featuring experts on economic, social, and environmental issues; peaceful conflict resolution; civic engagement; and multi-lateral cooperation and negotiation.

Distinguished contributors and professional facilitators will guide them to work together on designing pilot civic engagement projects to tackle concrete shared challenges.

Key Questions

Participants will address the following key questions:

  • What are the most pressing issues currently affecting Hong Kong's society? What are the underlying factors?
  • What does a "Hong Kong that Works for All" look like?
  • How to achieve an inclusive future for communities in Hong Kong?
  • What are the major obstacles for building bridges across generations, sectors, and beliefs?
  • How can governments, businesses, and civil society organizations work together to better respond to concerns and tensions arising among the population?

Outcomes and Impact

  • Begin developing a common language and building conditions of trust to address complex and sensitive issues in Hong Kong society
  • Propose ideas and develop multi-year plans for connecting emerging leaders across Hong Kong beyond this initial group of participants
