Sciana: The Health Leaders Network, Cohort 5 Meeting 1

Overview for Sciana Cohort 5

Overview for Sciana Cohort 5

Sciana: The Health Leaders Network was launched in 2017 by the Health Foundation (UK), the Robert Bosch Stiftung (Germany), and the Careum Stiftung (Switzerland), in collaboration with Salzburg Global Seminar. Sciana brings together each year a new cohort of outstanding leaders in health and health care policy and innovation, who meet four times across two years at Schloss Leopoldskron, the home of Salzburg Global.

The Sciana network provides members, initially drawn from the UK, Germany and Switzerland, with space to take inspiration and learning from across the globe, and time to share insights gained from their own experiences with peers, with whom they will work to address some of the shared challenges we are facing across Europe.

Members share a deep commitment to quality, sustainability, universal coverage, and patient and community-centered care, nationally and internationally. Their vision and collaboration, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, is critically needed to respond to common issues, such as fiscal strains, demographic change, chronic diseases, and migration.

Sciana members are focusing on key themes such as the following, and more may be added in line with Sciana members' mission and interests:

  • Globalization
  • Urbanization around the world
  • Ageing populations
  • Technical innovation and disruption, including the implementation of information technology in health care.
  • Patient engagement
  • The health workforce
  • Social determinants and inequities
  • The need for a greater focus on public health
  • Financially unsustainable health systems

Each cohort works together on a ‘Sciana Challenge’, which they themselves devise at their first meeting, to respond to some of the major challenges and opportunities for health and health care in the years to come.
