Social and emotional skills are increasingly critical to young people’s chances of success in education, work and relationships throughout their lives. They can be developed through formal education and through extracurricular activities. Around the world K-12 curricula are incredibly crowded so it is both right and smart to consider different opportunities to develop these skills.
From birth to age 16, children and young people spend more time outside of school than they do inside. The importance attached to social and emotional skills is increasing, as is understanding about how they can be developed. This program provides an important opportunity to hear from different experts about a range of different approaches outside of formal education.
Across two two-hour events participants will have the chance to hear from Andreas Schleicher, Director of the OECD Directorate for Education and Skills, who will share key insights from the recently published OECD Survey on Social and Emotional Skills.
Andreas will then be joined in discussion with a diverse group of experts who lead very different initiatives to help young people develop social and emotional skills, even when they are not described in exactly those terms. These programs are part of Salzburg Global Seminar’s Education for Tomorrow’s World series.
This interactive program is open public registration. Anyone working in the delivery of programs related to social and emotional skills both inside and outside formal education is welcome to attend. Participation is capped at 500.
