The unprecedented pace and scale of data-driven innovation in science and technology has given health system leaders a powerful set of tools to shape the future of health. However, delivering on the promise of this innovation in advancing predictive, preventive and personalized care raises difficulties and ethical questions.
While the rise of digital health and data-driven innovation offers an unparalleled opportunity to better diagnose, monitor and treat patients, questions remain around the sharing and use of data, such as how to promote digital solidarity so that data and technology support everyone, including the most vulnerable? What to do about racist (and biased) data algorithms informing clinical decision-making? What kind of health and genetic data sharing arrangement should there be with health payers and insurance? Novel approaches to data governance are needed to address these questions and many more.
With the 2020 European Strategy for Data, the European Union is making ground-breaking strides to ensure countries in the region are collectively equipped to better harness data insights, while upholding European values and rights.

This Sciana webinar will introduce some of the latest developments in European data governance, and later explore ways Europe is advancing a new code of conduct around data ethics, transparency, solidarity, and privacy. In doing so, it will highlight how these EU measures will help the regions response to COVID-19 in national settings.
