Memphis, Detroit and New Orleans are cities undergoing radical urban transformation and social renewal. Some of the most imaginative responses to the cities’ challenges are to be found in the culture and arts sector, where young cultural innovators are demonstrating the creative vision, talent and energy needed for social improvement and sustainable development in their communities.
The third US regional meeting of the Salzburg Global Forum for Young Cultural Innovators will bring together Fellows from the YCI hubs of Memphis, Detroit, and New Orleans, whose participation in the YCI Forum has been supported by the Kresge Foundation. They will reflect on their roles within their respective hubs and cities, and explore what they want to accomplish together in their local communities.

As creative change-makers, the YCIs confront similar challenges in their cities. Detroit, Memphis, and New Orleans are all contending with social inequality, weak public education systems, high unemployment levels, economic disparities, and a general lack of public support for the cultural sector. Working at the intersection of the arts and social change, the YCIs are committed to addressing these issues.
This workshop follows on from the annual program held in Salzburg and regional events in New Orleans (2018) and Detroit (2017), and the opportunity for the three cities’ YCIs to share experiences, coach each other, and strategize for the future.
The 40 Young Cultural Innovators will meet in Memphis, Tennessee, USA for a three-day program, taking part in a series of discussions, workshops, site visits and interactive exercises.
Participants will share and critique the micro-innovation projects that they have been working on in their respective cities and communities. They will also engage in peer mentoring sessions with artists and thought-leaders in Memphis and conduct site visits to meet with local creative change-makers whose work is also poised at the intersection of the arts and social impact.
The workshop’s theme will be “Moving from Me to We,” exploring further what it means to be a YCI Hub and what they can achieve individually and collectively.
