Sustainability, Education, and Management of Change in the Tropics - Maejo University, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Abstract

Maejo University, Chiang Mai, Thailand

The fourth of five seminars in a series entitled "Sustainability, Education and the Management of Change in the Tropics" will be convened at Maejo University in Thailand, September 29 - October 5, 2002.

This series is co-convened by the Salzburg Seminar and EARTH University, in collaboration with Noragric (Center for International Environment and Development Studies at the Agricultural University of Norway), to explore the potential of innovative educational models to foster sustainable development in the tropics.

The primary objective at this fourth seminar will be to analyze the challenges confronting Asian agriculture and examine the ability of innovative educational models to provide a means for sustainable development. The specific focus of this session will be to discuss the kind of change envisioned and the impact of this suggested change on education systems, professionals, and employers alike.

The session hopes to highlight:

  • the present situation in global Asia and the current forces of change;
  • the kinds of change envisioned;
  • the implications of change for graduates and other stakeholders;
  • educational models and paradigm changes; and
  • the strategies and action plans needed for change to take place among all stakeholders (universities, employers, policy makers, communities/farmers).
